I'm not a big fan of the old PK system, and the current lack of a system could allow us to design a better one. The problem, with awarding kills as has been discussed, is it allows for exploiting. Killing the same person over and over again is rewarded just as killing anyone else. So in order to get your special hair color or what not, all you need to do is level your "other" account to 12 and just kill it over and over again.
I'd love to see a system where killing people lower level than you results in less "points" than killing a level above or equal to you. And a system where if you kill the same person within a certain time frame your point rewards are lessened. This would help keep the system from being gamed, as in my example above, and would make picking on lower levels and repeat attacks less rewarding than killing equals and people wanting to fight (by entering the arena).
Your level = Enemy level = 100 points
Your level > Enemy level by 1 = 90 points
Your level > Enemy level by 2 = 80 points
and so on
Your level < Enemy level by 1 = 105 points
Your level < Enemy level by 2 = 110 points
and so on...
Murder frequency punishments:
Kill the same player less than a minute after killing him before = 0% points rewarded
kill the same player less than 5 minutes after killing him = 5% points rewarded
<= 10 minutes = 10% points
<= 20 minutes = 25% points
<= 30 minutes = 50% points
<= 40 minutes = 75% points
<= 50 minutes = 90% points
>= 1 hour = 100% points ( or murder took place in the arena)
Obviously you could point out holes in a system like that, but you can in any system, and I think we should at least consider redesigning the old system. But you can accumulate points and be rewarded as posts above discuss. It doesn't prevent spawn killing, or harrasment, but it would make it less rewarding (in a game sense). No system outside of some type of PvE badge will prevent griefers that some people complain about.
