A wicked idea for the future
KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS WOULD BE SEEN AFTER BETA AS AN IDEA.
Ok guys, I've brought this idea up back in booster but of course RR ignored me. I just remembered it so brace yourselves.
Weather Effects and Seasons.
This may seem a radical idea at first, but it would add a very immersive atmosphere to the game. For the Weather effects, you would have rain and snow, and occasionally heavy winds and storms.
Rain: A light shower that would come at a slight angle from the sky. The clouds would darken and there would be occasionally a stray bolt of lightning in the background. There would be the sound of the rain hitting the ground and you would see the white streaks of rain ahead of and around you, but not so many that they would completely lag you out.
Snow: Only occurs in the winter months of the year, light flakes of snow fall around you. There would be no blizzards because realistic snow pileup would force them to make a new map of the same map, BAD IDEA.
GOOD IDEA: If the arctic wasteland makes it in game, there could be a year round blizzard and light snow.
Winds: I dont know how they could pull this one off, but the trees would sway back and forth and the winds would howl at higher elevations. We would see waves along the coast (Iffy Subject though, hard to code waves).
Storms: This could be a possible overhaul though. The sky would turn very dark and there would be black clouds everywhere, this would only occur around twice a month. There would be heavy rain at an near 45 degree angle. There would be frequent lightning and thunder sounds in the distance. Smaller creatures would run into the forest for cover from the storm.
Ok lets analyze this:
Pros:
A cool atmosphere that has life to it, adding new dimesions to the game's immersive quality.
A break from the same 'ol same old day night cycle.
What game has a dynamic weather system?
It'd be pretty dang cool
Cons:
People with lower end PC's might have issues with the heavy storms during gameplay.
It would take a month or more to code (Unless the devs surprise me with their skills )
Ok guys, theres my piece, if you select no give your reasons for it.

They could possibly be sped up, so like a season would only last 1.5 months. (2 sets of seasons a year).

Making the wind push you slightly in one direction I don't think would be too hard, depending on how they do it, but making rain that wouldn't stress your computer would be the trick. Making footprints in the snow that disappeared after 10 mins would be great, and I don't think it would be too hard.
The rainstorms would be a blast for pvping
but I don't think this should be done until the game bug free, then we could have another separate beta to test out the weather, I would love to test it out
(I am just assuming this, never really programmed a game before :P)

It's a really good idea, but to play devils advocate...
The engine is made to use your CPU more than your GPU, so lower end computer can play it on higher settings I would assume. Some of these ideas would start to push your GPU more and more, so there would probably have to be some sort of weather settings, to make them less and less stressful on a worse and worse GPU. Granted most people don't have really bad GPUs, especially with prebuilt vista computers to make up for the randomly graphic heavy background. Still it's probably gonna be some difficult coding/etc.
Though this would be a really cool idea, and it could lead to some really intense pvp videos, pk attacks, etc.

I would want even the smallest bug to be fixed before they even thought about creating weather effects, but yes it would be cool.

con: adverse effects to seeing players -- i'm thinking PvPing in the skies you see some rain some snow... you throw a frog in the mix and if he's far enough it's camouflage.
no issues with wind. very cool idea. if this was implemented i would prefer to see an off/on switch [not needed for wind, however] so people who are just about PvP could switch it off, in order to see more clearly, give us more of an edge.
i have no doubt that the majority of players would love weather effects, and i would like to see it in because it would make the game appear that much more polished! woot woot!

This idea has been said for years =( I also think I remember
Jason saying some thing about weather effects, not sure tho.
And Choob, it would be better to not be able to turn off the weather effects for PVP, it would add an extra challange..

This is a great idea and one I have been toying with in my mind.
The engine already has built in features for this type of stuff so I dont know what your saying Kane.
Consider this added once the game is fully functional and all bugs are completely worked out and polished.

Thanks Jason! This is great news and I look forward to it!
(and Kane, leave your negative comments out of my thread. Your not an admin, and it's clear to everyone that your pulling this garbage outta your arse when you do this.)

yay this is gonna be awesome...it would actually be really good to include this in the first advertisement, extreme weather effects in an mmofps are rare if any, and would probably catch gamers interests.

Plus, think of the teaser/advertisement vids of fights in extreme weather like rain storms or snow storms. Not just animated 3rd person ones though that don't look anything like the actual game, it would definately catch a lot of people's interest.

I can see the noise of heavy boots crunching along in the show adding an excellent effect to that vid =P.

I think it would be a great idea and for the low end computers (like the one at my moms) make a thing were this effect could be toggled on and off. Also another problem alot of games face with weather is not being able to control the weather inside buildings so when you walk inside a house it's snowing/raining or what ever.
